Hello, I'm Emmy,

Emmy is 5 year old, 33 pound Labrador / Dachshund mix. She is up to date on her shots, has been spayed, but does have some special needs. She was rescued by Doggie Bonez and found her family about 2 1/2 years ago. Due to personal circumstances, she has returned to us. Her family would like to describe this beautiful dog to you.

She has a lot of playful energy and is happy as long as she has her yellow ball that smells like chicken, a place to play fetch, and a cozy warm bed to curl up on, and lots of pets.  She wakes us up every morning with kisses, ready to have breakfast and play. She makes us laugh everyday with her goofy playful nature.

She is a very social dog. She loves rides in the car, sunbathing, playing fetch and just being around people, especially ones that rub her ears and chest. She is housebroken and has never had an accident in the house. She hates going out in the rain but loves the sunshine on her back.

Emmy does like her daily routine – Wakes us up with little kisses, has breakfast and meds, goes potty outside and takes a nap until it’s playtime. Plays fetch in the backyard and sometimes just sunbathes. After dinner and meds she goes potty and goes to sleep for the night – usually around 7PM and doesn’t wake until the morning, except maybe to get a drink of water and switch beds.

She loves to chase after squirrels, rabbits or any other furry animal that may be in the yard so must have a fenced yard.

She needs to be in a quiet calm household as loud noises and too much motion scare her because of her past. Although she’s never been around children we would be afraid they would hurt her back or neck by accident so it’s probably best she is an adult only household.

Medical:

  • Emmy’s spine is fusing together and causes her pain – with the worst parts being at the base of her neck and the base of her spine by her tail. You have to be very gentle when petting her back, we just try and avoid her spine area all together.
  • She is prone to slipped disks and has had two in the past two years. We think she got them from jumping off the bed. (She had been sneaking into the guest bedroom and jumping on the bed we didn’t know it until we had company and there was dog hair on the bed) When she gets these, it’s extremely painful and it takes her days to recover. She won’t sit down or lie down and just paces or stands with her back hunched and her head tilting to the side. It’s so important she doesn’t jump off of anything.
  • We use sonic sound mats on low beds so she doesn’t jump on them and get hurt or keep the door shut.
  • She needs pain medication on a set schedule to stay a happy playful dog. Our vet has assured us they are very safe medications and he would give them to his pets if needed. We put them on top of her food bowl (as they need to be taken with food) and just drizzle some natural peanut butter on top of the meds. She always eats them right away.

o   Medications:

  • AM:
  • ½ Galliprant – The most important one. It’s an anti inflammatory to treat her pain.
  • 1 Fluoxetine – Anti depressant used to treat aggression.
  • ½ Methocarbamol – anti inflammatory to treat flare ups and muscle spasms.
  • 1 Gabapentin – Treats her chronic pain
  • PM:
  • ½ Methocarbamol
  • 1 Gabapentin
  • Emmy should never jump although she does quite often when she get excited and needs to be calmed down quickly to prevent her from getting hurt.
  • The vet says she really should not be walked on a leash without a harness. We used to be able to get one on her and walk her without causing her any pain. However, we had a dog sitter put one on her while we were out of town and we don’t know what happened but we haven’t been able to get one on her since. We even had an amazing dog trainer try and get one on her and he couldn’t. We have walked her a few times without a harness but she has been very sore the next day and it just isn’t worth the pain.
  • We use a ramp to get her in and out of the car so she doesn’t get hurt.
  • She does have to be sedated at the vet in order for them to trim her nails and give her shots. We hope this changes over time.
  • It’s so important for people to know that she can and will jump on and off things if you let her. However, usually within 24 hours the pain sets in and can be really bad for her – to the point where she can’t lie down or sit and it’s heartbreaking. So people need to understand that just because she can do these things and seems to enjoy them she will pay the price hours later. When this happens she needs a couple of days of no play to recover and she always does. Even when she seems better she needs to take it easy for a couple of days or it just comes back.

Emotional:

  • It’s clear that Emmy was abused by a previous owner. She used to cry and hide under the bed anytime we hung up clothes or touched a clothing hanger. Although she has moved past this with us, we want others to be aware of her insecurities as she starts to trust a new family.
  • We have never been able to pick her up. She just gets too afraid.
  • When meeting new people it’s always best to have them sit down so she can smell them and get to know them for a few minutes.
  • Never try and pet her while she is in her bed – any bed. Beds are her safe spot and we have them in every room of the house. She gets very afraid if you get near her while she’s in bed and won’t trust you for a while if you try and pet her. This will probably always be this way but it’s not a problem. People just need to be aware.
  • Emmy does not like other dogs. She will play with her sister one minute and attack her the next. Most of the time it is probably lashing out from pain or fear. However, she has gone across the room out of nowhere and attacked her sister Abby, completely un-provoked. She will also try to go after dogs in public while on a leash and through a fence. A privacy fence is really the best for her and we are not allowed to have them in our new neighborhood.
  • While she has dog aggression she has never been aggressive toward a person (other than a worker in our home carrying a ladder and equipment, which is understandable).

Emmy is such a special girl.
